Today, with a mix of nerves and excitement, my daughter left for her first day of 5th grade. She is, and has always been, spectacularly different. That’s the way she likes it. I am so proud of her glowing confidence, but I can’t lie and say that it doesn't make me nervous for the years to come. People don’t always embrace differences, and middle school is a hard place.
So today I pray that my daughter always stays true to herself, even when it feels easier to blend in. If that day does come, I hope she is still wearing her mismatched socks under her uniform.
